Schools to Host Bed Bug Forum

Bedbugs, the flat, nearly impossible to kill, visitors that hide under mattresses and in dark corners, will be discussed Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Danbury High School.

The Danbury School system is hosting a bed bug educational meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Danbury High School.

The idea for the meeting arose in the fall, when one parent washed a child's head in kerosene to kill the bugs, Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton said.

"They said they'd schedule something in the new year," Boughton said. "There is no crisis. There is no epidemic, although that can change."

"Bed bug infestations usually occur around or near the areas where people sleep. These areas include apartments, shelters, rooming houses, hotels, cruise ships, buses, trains, and dorm rooms," according to the national Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. "Bed bugs, a problem worldwide, are resurging, causing property loss, expense, and inconvenience. The good news is that bed bugs do not transmit disease. The best way to prevent bed bugs is regular inspection for signs of an infestation."

Danbury High School Principal Gary Bocaccio said the meeting is to help parents by giving them more information about bed bugs.

Depending on presentation, this could be helpful to some residents of Danbury. As to any child doused with kerosene, I hope DCF was called.

Based just on the article's heading, my first thought was that the bed bugs themselves were invited to a forum. Given the average IQ of the creatures, I had doubts that the forum would be a success. Imagine how relieved I was to read the full text. Chris L

Kudos to the Danbury schools for educating parents and others in the community. Those who seek even more educational information and guidance about bed bugs, lice, ticks and other pests will find https://identify.us.com a very useful resource.
