Marcus Dairy Bar Closes Feb. 6

The Marcus Dairy Bar will close at the end of business on Feb. 6 after nearly 63 years in business.

The Marcus Dairy Bar, a hot dog and hamburger stand that offers ice cream, meals, milk, the daily paper and a gathering place for dozens of people every day, will close on Superbowl Sunday this year.

Michael Marcus said the dairy bar will close at the end of business on Feb. 6, and he thanked the Cesca family for its support. The dairy bar and adjoining milk processing and distribution plant will be demolished this spring to make way for a retail shopping center.

"The Marcus Family would like to thank the many customers and employees who have helped make the small dairy bar Jack and Pearl opened in 1948 grow and become a landmark in our community," Marcus said in a prepared statement. "We'd be remiss if we didn't give special thanks to the Cesca family, who worked by our side since opening day."

Both Michael Marcus and his brother Neal Marcus say they are torn emotionally by tearing down the dairy bar that has been a part of their family for more than 60 years.

It isn't much to look at, the old Dairy bar tucked under the overpasses of I-84 as it divides and turns west toward New York and south toward Ridgefield at exit 3. It's been renovated and added onto so much, it's hard to imagine when it just served mainly ice cream.

For people who drove motorcycles in the summer, it became a rallying point for hundreds of people on Sundays. It was the place mom and pop drove the kids to on a weekend outing.

Viola Cesca is the employee Michael Marcus referred to as having been with the dairy bar since it opened. She has since retired and her son Fred Cesca is the general manager. Fred is taking it one day at a time. He has worked or played at the dairy bar since he was a little boy.
