Fire Displaces Five Families Friday Morning
The Danbury Fire Marshals are investigating a fire that damaged a Balmforth Avenue home Friday, sending five families into the street.
Danbury Fire Chief Geoff Herald reported a fire at 12:30 a.m. Friday that put 14 people on the street.
No injuries were reported, and the Danbury Fire Marshals Office is investigating the fire. It is not considered suspicious yet, Herald said.
The house was empty Friday morning, and the debris out back was frozen to the ground by the cold weather. The American Red Cross is assisting the people from the house who needed to be relocated.
Deputy Fire Marshal James Russell said he has conflicting information about how the fire started, and he will revisit the house Friday. He said it wasn't arson and it wasn't deliberate, and he is still working out exactly what happened.
Herald said the smoke detectors worked in the apartment, and they alerted the residents to the danger.
Herald said the fire was widespread before the department arrived. Engines 21, 22, 23, 24, the truck company and Volunteer Squad 7 all responded. Once the firefighters arrived, the damage was halted to what was already destroyed. The Danbury Police Department also helped with traffic and security.
Herald said the home's electrical system was destroyed and no one can live there until it is renovated. The rear of the building was heavily damaged.
Fire cause and origin under investigation by Deputy Fire Marshal Russell. It is not considered suspicious at this time.
The American Red Cross is helping 14 people – 10 adults and four children – in five families from the Balmforth Avenue fire, according to Red Cross Spokesman Paul Shipman. The Red Cross is providing temporary lodging and financial assistance for emergency clothing and food needs. The Red Cross is also providing comfort kits, containing age and gender appropriate personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, shaving supplies and other items a family might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire. Children's kits include a stuffed toy.
American Red Cross disaster assistance is free of charge, a gift made possible by generous donations and the work of volunteers. For more information about the Red Cross and how you can help, visit www.ctredcross.org.

5 families in one home?

Ten adults and four children in a two story multi-unit building. You have a problem with that?

Jimmy Pursey,
WTNH reports the fire was at 41 Balmforth Ave, in Danbury. Zillow reports it as a single family building. So yes, 5 families in a single family building seems like a lot to me.

Hi G,
Yes. Five families in one home. One basement apartment (clearly illegal) and four others. Apparently there should only be three, but the city raised this issue in 2004 with a cease and desist, and they're looking through the records now to check out that worked out.

It was a single family home structure with five apartments in it. Not meaning to kick any dirt into someone face here, but what bothers me more is a 5,000-square-foot McMansion with two people in it.

Mark Langlois,
Single family is just that. This was 5 families living in a single family home. That is 4 families too many. As to your aside about McMansions, I welcome any couple who wants to pay taxes and live in one. It helps our community, they consume fewer resources per square foot and pay a lot more per capita to live here.
Why does it not bother you that 5 families are living in a one family home, but a couple may elect to live in a single family home? Is that really what bothers you??

The fire marshal and fire chief didn't say anything about any illegal apartments in the house on Balmforth Avenue. It was a five family home. That's what happens in a city.
People create apartment buildings out of houses. That's a city's evolution. The taxes on that house are paid by the people who rent them. No rent? The owner pays the taxes.

Mark Langlois.
I checked the Danbury tax assessor database. The building is zoned for 3 families. You can find it here - http://data.visionappraisal.com/DanburyCT/findpid.asp?iTable=pid&pid=12129
5 families is 2 more than the building is permitted by our city. Assuming we agree that rule of law is part of city evolution, do you accept 5 families is 2 too many?

Hi G,
Your math is sound. I'll talk to the city about this on Monday. I wonder if the rent paid the landlord for the two illegal apartments was worth it. Just a question.

Mark,
I hope the city makes the landlord explain the two extra families. Limiting the number of people / families in a dwelling should mostly be about safety then quality of life.

One thing that these comments make clear is the real and growing need for affordable housing. It is a very real concern not only for those new to our country but for the elderly who need to move from their long-time homes and for young people just starting out. We often see families with young children move from place to place as their circumstances change.
This takes a toll on our neighborhoods and communities. It is something that we can improve if we have the will.

Everyone here is complaining about the apt being illegal or to many families..blah blah blah..not one person has said..I hope theese families are alright..if each of you gave to theese families..they can actually replace EVERYTHING they have lost...to lose all you have ever owned must be devastating..I have given to one of the families and I have never seen someone so humbled.i left a previous comment but I think it got erased...I hope none of you experience anything of this nature..PAY IT FORWARD
