American Legion Expands Flag Displays in Downtown Danbury

American flags will now be displayed along White Street and West Street in Danbury thanks to the American Legion Post #60 Color Guard.  This group of volunteer veterans had previously been placing American flags along Main Street in front of business participating in Post’s flag display program.  This program was recently expanded to include White Street and West Street and on Labor Day, while most people were still sleeping, American Legion Color Guard members Bob Krokovich, Sr. and Allen Keeler along with Mayor Mark Boughton and Mayoral Aide P.J. Prunty, placed Flags in front of the newly participating White and West Street businesses.

Robert Krokovich, Sr. is the Flag Program Co-Captain who launched this project and continues to expand its reach along with volunteer Connie Hallecks.  “Displaying the Nation’s flag is dear to us and I thank our participating businesses alomg with Mayor Mark Boughton, P.J. Prunty from the Mayor’s office and Councilman Tom Saadi for making the expansion of this patriotic program a success” said Krokovich. 

Mayor Boughton, an American Legion Post member, and P.J. Prunty assisted Krokovich and  Keeler in placing the flags at dawn on Labor Day this year.  “I am honored to have the American Legion Post #60 of Danbury ask me to help put up the flags throughout downtown Danbury on Labor Day. This is a special tradition that would not be possible without the hard work from the American Legion. I would like to thank the working men and women of America for their contribution to our nation" said Mayor Boughton.

This program relies on volunteers from the American Legion and the participation of and donations from local businesses.  Any businesses on Main, White or West Streets interested in participating in this patriotic program should contact Co-Captain Robert Krokovich at 203-648-8985, volunteer Connie Hellecks at 203-826-4323 or Legion members Tom Saadi at 203-797-1797.  To participate a businesses must have a parking meter in front of their location and make a donation of any amount of $25 or greater to cover the costs of the flags and related expenses.

The American Legion Color Guard places the flags on the following holidays: Presidents Day, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, September 11th, POW Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day.
